Interplay: a group show featuring Kerry Suzanne Campbell and Michael Maas

"in·ter·play /ˈin(t)ərˌplā/ noun : the way in which two or more things have an effect on each other."

Interplay is a group show featuring uber modernist artist, Kerry Suzanne Campbell, and biomorphic abstract artist, Michael Maas.

About the Artists:

Kerry Suzanne Campbell is attracted to the clean and poetic energy of the mid 20th century modern aesthetic because it exemplifies a certain simplicity and celebration of the juxtaposition of things in form and space. Her work explores the intersection and interplay of ideas, life’s exquisite beauty or agony, individual expression, and relational metaphor. Her work is uber modernist in a sense. Her work is bold and expressive abstract representations of form, but these forms interplay with each other and express a type of relationship, an abstract tension, or a metaphorical mood or sense of story. She also explores human relationships and allegory through abstract figurative works that often explores the themes of relationships and alienation. Other works are abstract expressionist in their story-telling. Kerry received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of California, Davis, where she studied under the New York artist, Jane Rosen. She holds an M.A. in Creative Writing and often writes poems to go with her works. She has exhibited throughout the United States, including Washington D.C., Seattle, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

Michael Maas became a full-time artist in 1996 after having been, among other things, a bicycle racer in France, a meat-cutter in Illinois, and a life insurance salesman in Newport Beach, California. Primarily self-taught, his biomorphic paintings are in collections in Australia, Canada, England, France, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, and throughout the United States. Best known for his illusionistic, patterned-abstract “Alhambra Series” paintings, Michael shows regularly with galleries and museums throughout Southern California, and currently has his studio in Fallbrook, CA.

———
This body of work was captured during an expedition to the Omo Valley and the Gambella region of Ethiopia near the border with South Sudan in the fall of 2016. In the Omo, Steve visited the fierce Surma tribe known as the Suri which has rarely been visited due to their remote location. A recently completed highway from the capital will undoubtedly change their almost primal way of life forever. The same trip included time with the Nuer of Ethiopia, cousins of the much larger population of Nuer in South Sudan. Traditional Nuer culture in this region was modified some time ago by the presence of western missionaries but more recent economic development and the lure of factory jobs poses an even greater threat to their traditional lifestyle. Both groups are pastoralists but tribal cultures and their approach to tending cattle are quite distinct. Herding amongst the Suri is primarily a male activity, where men live with the cattle far from the village and return home only intermittently. In contrast, the Nuer people maintain their cattle much closer to their homes, bringing them into the center of village every night so they can be protected from wildlife and nearby marauding tribes.
